As is typical of the early races of the season, over half of the starting field failed to make the checkered flag: John, Kwech, Harry, Buffum, with a total of seven engine failures in the race. Bob Sharp won in the new car, number 68, with Mike second, thirteen seconds behind. Horst failed to finish because of a gearbox that broke less than a fourth of the way through the race, a new mechanical ailment that had come up to haunt him. The showdown between Horst and John was nonexistent in the opening race.

John said later, “I know the guys were happy to finish first and second like that in the first race, especially since we were really worried about not being ready and not testing enough. But my car wasn’t ready, the 1800 engine anyway. That was one of those races where everybody around here came home winning but me.

“After a race it seems you are always walking between a camera and a driver. It gets embarrassing,” John relates, “because you know they’re taking your picture. You don’t know whether to look down, or go ahead and stand still and let them get it over with. They move around and look at you from about ten different angles, trying to get the car in the background or you talking to somebody like Brock. You’d like to pick your nose or scratch your ass. Or maybe they want to get that truck in the picture. That thing is so pretentious I don’t believe it. That huge truck to carry three little shitboxes. It all makes me think about doing something gross. I think I would like to stand up in the back of that truck and pee all over the top of my car.”

TRANS-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP/TWO-FIVE CHALLENGE,
